New Year - Renewed Focus!

As we start 2025 we look back on our accomplishments for 2024 and we can finally take some time and reflect on how our small business is doing and the changes that we have made along the way.

February 2024 we purchased a CNC pod and rail HolzHer router which was a big step as we have no idea how to run the thing, BUT we know we needed one.  A shop in Regina was closing as the owners were retiring and no one wanted to take over the business after 103 years and 3 generations of skilled woodworkers. Sad but that is the state of affairs in Canada.  Luckily we got some great deals and the machinery will hum on.

This year we hit a huge milestone of 11,000 orders since 2018, which translates to well over 15,000 individual articles shipped off to great customers North America wide.  Our production schedule improved a bit but we sill cant seem to get it shorter than a 2 week cycle for orders as each one is custom made for each customer. Slow and steady works best for us as there is never a compromise on quality.

Rumina who is our kitchen ware maker has really developed her skills and is a master with the spokeshave and sanders and has developed a whole range of products which we will feature soon in our online store.

The Craft Show season from June to the end of November was fantastic for us this year where we featured our stands, cutting boards, full range of kitchenwares and of course free advice! We had shows in Brandon MB, Saskatoon SK, Moosejaw SK, Regina SK and Weyburn, our home town.  Thanks to all who purchased our wares and its always fun to meet so many people who appreciate the handmade.

The shop of course is getting to be a bit more organized and we have really got the lean flow going. This winter we will be doing a rearrange of equipment which we do at least once a year and sometimes twice to help the flow and ease the stress of so many orders.

Lumber prices continue to fluctuate with White Oak having the most jump in price at and additional 30% over summer 2024 prices.  I suspect it is due to the CDN vs USD exchange rate as the vast majority of our white oak is from Kentucky. Walnut has a large variation in price from 1 Common grade to Select grade but that is always the case.  Again, most of the best walnut milled in the USA is sent straight overseas and never hits the domestic market.  Alas.

We will do our best to keep the shop more up to date, fluffing the pillows and smoothing the sheets as they say, and most of all -

Thank You - for all the great support in 2024. Citius, Altius Fortis.

Dave and Raushana
